SRINAGAR, Mar 28: Nestled in the heart of the Baramulla district, Kreeri village has long been celebrated for its exquisite copper crafts. Passed down from generation to generation, the village’s rich tradition is kept alive by nearly 40% of its population, including women who have embraced the art form.

These skilled artisans create stunning works of art that are highly sought-after throughout the country, drawing attention to the village’s unique cultural heritage. According to Kashmir Despatch, the art of copper crafts is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the people of Kreeri.
From the most miniature trinkets to the largest sculptures, these craftsmen and women have mastered shaping copper into intricate designs and patterns, making each piece unique and exquisite. The significant number of women engaged in this occupation demonstrates the progressive character of the village’s culture.

While women in numerous areas of the country are typically confined to conventional roles, in Kreeri, they have succeeded in establishing their presence in this male-dominated industry. They exhibit their abilities and inventiveness to the world. However, despite the popularity of copper crafts, the artisans of Kreeri face numerous challenges.
The lack of modern tools and techniques often hinders their ability to create high-quality pieces, while the lack of access to markets and fair prices means that many of them struggle to make a decent living.
Locals said that the administration and locals must support these artisans and help them to overcome the challenges they face. This could involve providing them with access to modern tools and techniques, as well as connecting them with markets where they can sell their wares at fair prices.
“We must also recognize the cultural and artistic significance of copper crafts, and work to preserve this heritage for future generations. By doing so, we can not only support the livelihoods of the artisans of Kreeri but also help to promote and celebrate the rich cultural traditions of our country,” a local added.
