NEW DELHI, Nov 28: In a significant move towards strengthening the social security and healthcare framework for workers in India, the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is aligning its services with Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). This convergence aims to expand access to quality medical care for over 14.43 crore ESIC beneficiaries and their families, marking a critical step toward achieving the government’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
Under the leadership of Labour and Employment Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Ministry of Labour and Employment is prioritizing social security initiatives that ensure health benefits and medical coverage for workers. On November 26, 2024, Secretary of Labour and Employment, Ms. Sumita Dawra, reviewed the progress and implementation of this convergence plan, which promises to significantly bolster the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
What This Means for Beneficiaries
ESIC Director General Ashok Kumar Singh outlined the extensive benefits of the initiative. Through this partnership, ESIC beneficiaries will gain access to secondary and tertiary medical services at more than 30,000 AB-PMJAY-empanelled hospitals across India. Importantly, there will be no financial ceilings on treatment costs under this arrangement, ensuring comprehensive care at no expense to the beneficiaries. Charitable hospitals across the country will also be brought on board to further expand access to affordable healthcare.
The existing ESIC health infrastructure, which includes 165 hospitals, 1,590 dispensaries, 105 Dispensary-cum-Branch Offices (DCBOs), and approximately 2,900 empanelled private hospitals, will remain operational. The addition of AB-PMJAY facilities will supplement these efforts, providing beneficiaries with an even broader network of quality healthcare providers.
Expanding Coverage Nationwide
The ESI Scheme has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, expanding from 393 districts in 2014 to 687 districts out of a total of 788 in the country. The collaboration with AB-PMJAY is expected to further extend medical coverage to the remaining districts, ensuring that healthcare reaches even the most underserved regions.
A Boost for Social Security and Health Equity
This convergence is poised to transform the healthcare landscape for India’s workforce by enhancing the accessibility, affordability, and quality of medical care. The initiative will not only strengthen the social security ecosystem but also promote health equity, ensuring that essential healthcare services are within reach for all, regardless of location or financial status.
