GDC Baramulla celebrates International Women’s Day

BARAMULLA, Mar 8: International Women’s Day was celebrated at Govt Degree College Baramulla on Wednesday, which was attended by students of different departments and staff members.

The program was jointly organized by the Women Development Cell and Physical education department of GDC Baramulla.

The inaugural session was initiated by the introductory remarks by Prof. Tanveer Ahmad (HOD), Physical education department.

Vice Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Chalkoo in his presidential address formally welcomed all the participants and acknowledged that besides the colossal developments in science and technology, women are coming to the forefront in sports as well as academics.

The first session commenced with a self defense programme which aims to teach different techniques for girls which they can use to protect themselves.

“Recently a Kashmiri girl students had been attacked by Auto rickshaw driver in Delhi by knife, girls need to learn these techniques for their self defense as women are now shining in every field, they are not restricted to house wives only,” Dr. Tariq said.

Asma Nazir Psychiatrist at Govt Medical College Baramulla was chief guest of the event, which was accompanied by Vice Principal Prof, Dr Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo, Dr.Tanveer (HOD) Physical education, Dr Naushaad (HOD) Psychology and other faculty members were also present on the occasion.

Appreciating the efforts for organizing such workshops especially for women, Asma Nazir, in her address said that the incidents of assaults on women are on rise in Kashmir women need to come front if any such things happened to them.

“It is hard to imagine that such incidents are also on rise in Kashmir. Due to conservative mindset, we (people) hesitate and don’t report to concerned authorities. There is possibility of such incidents in future also,” she further said that it is the call of the day to inform and educate women about Sexual Abuse.

The program was also attended by Musharaf Quyoom,who is  working as an instructor at Kashmir Combatives. He has won several medals at national and international level and is a black belt player.

He gave an insight into the basics of Martial arts and  demonstrated six basic principles of self defense.”Age and height doesn’t matter in combat, what matters is skills and techniques”.

 “The contribution that women have made in the past and present that are shaping our world for a better future.“Don’t hesitate to take up any journey in your life no matter how hard it may seem,” the instructor added.

Meanwhile HOD Physical education department said the Physical education department is ready to provide opportunities for the women in all aspects mostly in the field of sports  in college campus.

At the end of the second session, the memento had been presented by Dr. Tariq Chalkoo to Asma Nazir as guest of honor of the event.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof Nuzhat, HoD Botany. She expressed her gratitude to all the speakers, inspiring and enlightening the audience with their inspiring words
