Govt Accords Sanction to Constitution of Committees Aimed to Conserve, Manage Wetlands in J&K

Srinagar/Jammu, Jun 14 : Government of Jammu and Kashmir has accorded sanction to the constitution of separate Technical and Grievance Committees under Rule 5 (6) of the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017 here on Monday.

The Technical Committee as per a Government Order No. 509-JK(GAD) of 2021, Dated 14.06.2021, of which a copy lies with GNS, would be headed by Director, Department of Environment, Ecology with Remote Sensing with Chief Conservator of Forests (Working Plan, Research and Training); Law Officer, J&K Pollution Control Committee; Dr Shakil Ahmad Romshoo – Professor Department of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir; Dr Deepika Slathia – Sr. Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu; Er. Aijaz Rasool – Retired Superintendent Engineer, Lakes and Waterways Development Authority as members besides Special Secretary (Technical), Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment J&K as Member Secretary.

The order has kept open a window for any other member that may be co-opted by the Committee as per requirement.

The constituted Committee has been mandated to review brief document and management plans and to advise on any technical matter referred by Wetland Authority.

The Technical Committee shall meet at least once in every quarter to perform its functions, as per Rule 5(7) of the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, it states.

With particular to the Grievance Committee it says that the Committee would be headed by Chief Wildlife Warden J&K with Additional Commissioner, Jammu/Kashmir, in the offices of Divisional Commissioner, Jammu/Kashmir and Member Secretary, J&K Pollution Control Committee as members alongside Special Secretary/Additional Secretary, Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment (Member-Secretary of the Authority) as Member Secretary.

The Grievance Committee is to provide a mechanism for hearing and forwarding the grievances raised by public to the Authority.

The Grievance Committee shall meet at least once in every quarter to perform its functions, as per Rule 5 (7) of the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, it states.

The Department of Environment, Ecology and Remote Sensing shall be the Nodal Department for preparing digital inventory of wetlands in Jammu and Kashmir, it concludes. (GNS)
