Srinagar, Feb 15 : The liquor ban issue has taken another turn in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir, especially after three MLAs submitted private members’ bills advocating for a complete ban on alcohol in the Union Territory. However, the National Conference leadership appears less concerned, citing potential impacts on tourism while offering other perspectives.
In the latest development regarding the liquor ban, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary as per Kashmir Despatch reacted by emphasizing that drugs are a more pressing issue than alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to the media about the liquor ban, Deputy CM Choudhary stated that while a ban on alcohol is appropriate, the more significant issue for Jammu and Kashmir is the problem of drugs.
He stressed that combating drug use has become essential because it is adversely affecting our youth, and it has infiltrated every household.
The Deputy CM mentioned that law enforcement falls within the jurisdiction of the honorable LG, and he would request the LG to direct the DGP to take strict action against those involved in the drug trade.
He described drugs as a disease that is severely impacting our children and warned that it could lead to the deterioration of future generations. He noted that while Jammu and Kashmir has not historically faced such a crisis, it has now become a serious issue.
Earlier, Tanvir Sadiq responded to the liquor ban by emphasizing that Kashmir is a tourist state, where similar practices exist in many Arab countries. He highlighted the importance of involving all stakeholders, particularly travel agents, in discussions regarding the ban.
He stated that if a liquor ban is implemented, it is vital to consider its effects on tourism carefully. He acknowledged that while there is overall opposition to the ban, every aspect must be taken into account.
