Post 370: Families of slain political workers disappointed

0

Srinagar : Nighat Patel, the 23-year-old daughter of a slain political worker in Kashmir, is disappointed after the abrogation of Article 370. The final-year MBA student of Kashmir University feels that the move could shrink her job prospects drastically. Her father, Ghulam Nabi Patel, was killed by militants in May 2018 in Pulwama.

The veteran mainstream politician from south Kashmir led a political career of 30 years and was associated with the National Conference and the Congress as well. He was also the district president of the Peoples Democratic Party. At their home in Pulwama, inside a guarded colony of political workers, the family shows the photographs of Ghulam Nabi Patel with top leadership of the state. Nighat is worried that outsiders will take away the employment opportunities of Kashmiris.

“It is such a big loss, we have gone many steps backward due to this, our education and degrees are meaningless now. Outsiders will come to take away our jobs, the abrogation of Article 370 only makes sense if this could create employment in Kashmir otherwise it is meaningless.”

Twenty-five kms away from Patel”s house in Shopian lives the family of Gowhar Bhat, a 29-year-old who was killed by militants in 2017. The family breaks down every time they Gowhar”s name is taken. Gowhar was a BJP worker. His father, Mohamamd Ayub Bhat said that the abrogation of Article 370 just does not make any sense at a juncture when Kashmir was witnessing a phase of relative peace and calm. Unlike Nuzhat Patel, Mohammad Ayub Bhat fears that the move could trigger violence and lead demographic changes in Kashmir.

“I think militancy will increase after this, this can once again escalate the situation. The motivation behind the abrogation of Article 370 is plain politics, the people of Kashmir are poor and the Article acted was a defence for them. If rich outsiders come to Kashmir and start buying land, a time will come when nothing will be left for Kashmiris”, said Mohammed Ayub Bhat.

As the people across Kashmir and the rest of India are trying to make a sense of the removal of Article 370, the families of the political workers who raised the Indian flag and fell to militant bullets are trying to understand what the new scenario means for them, and whether this would help in making the situation easier for them or further complicate them.

Propaganda-mongers Spreading Confusion About J&K, Says US-Based Kashmiri Body

0

Washington: Asserting that Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian constitution allowed a breeding ground for armed violence in Jammu and Kashmir, a top Kashmiri-American body on Wednesday alleged that a group of propaganda-mongers are spreading misinformation and confusion about the abrogation of these provisions.

“There has been a tremendous amount of confusion, misinformation, and fear being disseminated by propaganda-mongers and the ill-informed press about the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A by the government of India,” the influential Kashmiri Overseas Association (KAO) said.
While it is human nature to condemn any injustice, like loss of internet and phone lines to the people living in the Kashmir valley, it is also prudent to understand the implication of these articles that shaped the destiny of “us minorities of the region over the last 70 years”, said the Us-based organisation, representing the Kashmiri diaspora.
The temporary articles 370 and 35A were highly discriminatory against all indigenous Kashmiri minorities – Sufi Muslims, Shia Muslims, Ahmadi Muslims, Dalits, Gujjars, Kashmiri Hindus (commonly known as Kashmiri Pandits), Kashmiri Sikhs, and Buddhists, it said, adding that only the majority, Sunni Muslims, were privileged to benefit from this provision.

“Article 370 and 35A allowed a breeding ground for armed violence in Kashmir,” the KAO said.

It said the campaign of intimidation and harassment had been ongoing in the valley for decades and worsened in the late 80s with growing influence of the strait-laced interpretation of Islam propagated through “Wahhabism”.

Pakistan was able to capitalize on this by financing, arming and training militant groups across the border, the KOA said, adding that this all came to a head on the night of January 19, 1990.
“Through the loudspeakers of mosques, militants screamed words of hate for minorities. ‘Convert, leave, or die’ and ‘leave your women behind and send the men off’ were popular slogans. In the weeks following, leaflets were posted on the doors of Kashmiri Hindus asking for their immediate departure from the valley or face the consequences,” the KOA said.

This was followed by the targeted killings of Kashmiri Hindus and Sikhs, in order to send a clear message to the minority communities that they were not welcome in the Kashmir valley, the KOA said in a statement to the mainstream American press.

“It uprooted peace-loving, helpless minorities. Over 500,000 Hindus and Sikhs were ethnically cleansed out of their homes with purpose to create a minority-free Kashmir valley,” it said.

Yet, because of Article 370, the government remained silent spectator, the KOA claimed.
“We were left to bear the horrors of terrorism on our own, including being forced to witness the murders and rapes of our own family members. Our community members were brutally killed, with many homes, businesses, and temples destroyed. We became refugees in our own country, some forced to live in squalid tent camps,” it said.

The KOA said it believes that abrogation of these articles, which provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir, will provide equal opportunities to all and a chance for the development of regions like Ladakh which have been neglected for far too long.

Removal of these articles will help curtail terrorism in the valley and empower women as more progressive laws will apply to them equally with the rest of the country, it said.

Proactive measures of added security, restrictions, and internet regulation placed by the Government of India are crucial to curb terrorism and prevent the loss of civilian lives and curtail the foreseen unrest and retaliation by militant groups, it said.

Facing Infiltration attempts at LoC, IB, from third countries every Night: GoC KJS Dhilon

0

Srinagar : The army on Wednesday said that Pakistan is pushing militants from the LoC, International Border and also from the third countries and the launch pads are full with the “infiltrators” who are ready to sneak and disrupt the peace in Kashmir.

According to news agency the army also said that two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were apprehended in Gulmarg along with the material used for making IEDs on August 21 and the duo are residents of Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

Addressing press conference at Army’s Srinagar based 15 Corps headquarters here, General officer Commanding (GoC) 15 Corps, Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhilon, who was flanked by Additional Director General of Police Law and Order Munir Khan, said: “We are facing infiltration attempts from every where—at the LoC, International Border, and also from Panthankote and third countries.

All the launch pads are full and militants are ready to sneak in to this side to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere here.”

The GoC Dhilon said that almost every night there is an infiltration attempt. “So far, not a single infiltration attempt has been successful. We killed some infiltrators and their bodies were not even picked up by the Pakistan army despite the fact that we took up the matter with the DGMO of Pakistan,” he said.

He said that on August 21, two Pakistani nationals, who are associated with the Lashkar-e-Toiba were apprehended in Gulmarg sector. “The arms, ammunition and the material used to trigger IEDs was recovered from them. The duo is in our control and this reflects that how desperate Pakistan is to disrupt the peace in Kashmir,” General Dhilon said.

About the Gulmarg Sector, General Dhillon said that based on specific, general inputs and rumours also, some 350 search operations were conducted. “It is our duty to take note of the rumours. Today, I can tell you that Gulmarg is peaceful and there is nothing like as the rumours were spreading.

I invite the media to visit the Gulmarg and stay wherever they wish to and report about the tourist destination,” he said.

Communication Gag: Pen drives last hope for working Journos in Kashmir

0

Srinagar : As the Valley continues to witness cellular as well as the internet gag since August 05, 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir’s division into two Union Territories, the valley based journalists are facing immense hardships in performing their professional duties and the data is transferred through pen drives only.

The situation has reached to the point when the journalists are solely dependent on pen drives to get the material or to submit stories at their respective offices.

A reporter after compiling his story usually faces difficulties to submit his or her report in local dailies here due to the continuous internet gag and communication gag. In such a situation, pen drives are the only option for the media persons to submit their reports for publishing.

Mubashir Ahmad, who works with one of the daily locals here told that it has become hectic job for the journalists as well as the media houses to work in such an atmosphere where there is no internet as well as the cellular facility.

“Our office has now tasked the employees to visit media facilitation on shift basis to get the material. Working in such an atmosphere and that too in 21st century has left the journalists to lurch at large,” he told.

Another journalist, Nasir Ahmad said that pen drives in the prevalent situation are the only option for journalists to continue their professional duties. “Present situation recalls the previous era when internet was a dream and hard drives were the only options for journalists to submit their reports,” he said.

Ahmad told news agency that the government though established a media facilitation centre for the journalists but it won’t have any impact on the journalists who have to file their reports in daily locals. “This centre has though helped the journalists working for national and international newspapers and portals but provided no sigh of relief to the local journalist who has to file his report and submit it through pen drives only,” he added.

The journalists working in local dallies and news portals here have appealed the government to restore the internet facilities so that they could heave a sigh of relief.

Srinagar, Sep 04 : A top police officer on Tuesday said that only five deaths of civilians took place since August 5 and not a single death was registered due to the security forces action. He said two Gujjars, shopkeeper was killed by militants while as truck driver and the Soura boy died after being hit by stones during clashes.

While addressing press conference at Badamibagh Cantonment here, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Law and Order/Security, Munir Khan said that five deaths were reported since August 5 and not a single causality was reported in security forces action.

He said that Kashmir was normal and that there was not any major law and order situation since August 5. “This is because of the fact that due to the communication gag including barring of internet services, we managed to maintain peace as rumour mongering that largely contributes to law and order issues, was contained well,” the ADGP Khan said.

Asked whether the Soura boy died of pellets or stone, he said that preliminary investigations reveal that the boy identified as Asrar Ahmed Khan of 90-feet Soura near Elahi Bagh, died after he was hit by a stone. “We will still investigate and get his medical report and other details,” Khan added.

He said the credit for maintaining peace goes to the security agencies as there were clear directions that there should be no civilian causality. “We succeeded on that front,” he said. “Normalcy will return soon gradually.”(KNO)

Gulmarg on high alert following Pakistan’s bids to push militants

0

Kashmir’s most-visited tourist destination of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district has been put on a high alert after infiltration bids by militants in the past one week, and multiple attempts to attack the forward posts by the Pakistan Army, according to officers of the counter-insurgency grid in Srinagar.

Sources in the security agencies said the Army’s Ustad and Gulab posts in the upper reaches of Gulmarg were posed with threats by armed men who sneaked two kilometres into this side of Kashmir. Sources said the attacks were repulsed but the infiltrators remain un traced.

Security agencies apprehended two persons, Khalid and Nazim, both residents of Pakistan Muzaffarabad, in the Gulmarg range, two days ago. “They are being questioned on Pakistan’s rare attempts toengage troops in Gulmarg,” an official said.

Initial reports suggest both were “militant guides” and could be part of new infiltration bids facilitated in the area. Meanwhile, the movement to the tourist destination, just 55 km away from capital Srinagar, is being monitored and restricted, an official said.

A hotelier confirmed to The Hindu that the Army for the first time searched the premises of many hotels in Gulmarg in the past one week. Sources said the Army had “relieved scores of local porters” working for them for unknown reasons, and cautioned the local population to remain vigilant.

The latest development comes weeks after the Indian Army fortified its positions in the high-altitude tourist destination in the wake of revocation of Jammu & Kashmir’s special status on August 5. The Army has placed Bofors gunships to secure the strategic Haji Pir pass, connecting Kashmir valley’s Uri with Poonch in the Pir Panjal valley.

The Indian Army has advantageous positions on the Line of Control (LoC) in Gulmarg, where both the armies are positioned eyeball-to-eyeball. Sources said Karnah and Tangdhar in the frontier Kupwaradistrict was opened as new front of shelling by Pakistan.

Pakistan has no locus standi on Kashmir:Rajnath

0

Leh, Aug 29 (PTI) Pakistan has no locus standi on Kashmir and no country is backing it on the “current issue”, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday amid Islamabad’s efforts to internationalise the Centre’s move to abrogate provisions of Article 370.

Addressing a DRDO event here, Singh asked how can India talk to Pakistan when it keeps trying to destabilise India using terror.

India wants to have good neighbourly relationship with Pakistan, but it should first stop exporting terror to India, Singh said.

He asserted that Pakistan has no locus standi on Kashmir.

“I want to ask Pakistan, when had Kashmir belonged to it. Kashmir was always part of India,” he said.

Pakistan should focus on addressing human rights violations and atrocities in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the Union minister said.

He said US Defense Secretary Mark Esper during a telephonic conversation told him that abrogation of provisions of Article 370 was an internal matter of India.

“No country is with Pakistan on the current issue,” Singh added.
