Vaccination single best defense against allergies: DAK

0

Srinagar, May 28 : As allergy season peaks in Kashmir valley with increase in the number of people seeking medical advice for various allergic disorders, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday said allergy vaccination, also called immunotherapy is the single best defense against allergies.

“Allergy vaccination is the most effective form of treatment for allergies,” said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan.

“Vaccine therapy reduces allergy symptoms, improves quality of life and reduces the need for allergy medication,” he said.

“Allergy vaccine is safe and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma and insect bites,” he added.

“Studies have found that immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis reduces the risk for later development of asthma in children,” Dr Nisar said adding that “allergy immunotherapy has the potential to alter the natural course of allergic disease and prevent the risk of developing new allergies.”

Dr Nisar said allergy vaccine is given by administering specific allergen extract to which the person is allergic. These natural allergen extracts are prepared based upon person’s skin test results.

Vaccine is given weekly by injection under the skin for 3 to 6 months during the build-up phase followed by monthly injection during the maintenance phase for a period of 3 to 5 years.

“For needle-shy persons, daily tablets of allergen extracts are administered under the tongue to achieve similar results,” he said.

Dr Nisar said one-third of population in Kashmir suffers from allergies. Spring is the key time for allergies and people are seen coughing, sneezing, wheezing and with skin eruptions. The biggest spring allergy trigger is pollen.

Quoting a report from Government Medical College Srinagar, he said 90% of people in Kashmir are allergic to Dramun pollen, 70% to Kiker pollen, 60% to Soi pollen and 18% to poplar pollen. The report reveals house dust mite as the main culprit which causes allergy in 92% of people.

“As it is not possible to completely eliminate the allergen in a daily setting and symptom-based treatments do not provide long-lasting respite, therefore allergy vaccination remains the only way to protect people from allergies,” said Dr Nisar.

He said Party Patron Muzaffar Hussain Beigh,   Abdul Rahman Veeri, Abdul Haq Khan, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Dr Mehboob Beg, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Sartaj Madni, Naeem Akhtar, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Nizam-ud-din Bhat, Firdous Tak, Choudhary Hameed, Ved Mahajan, Tarlok Singh Bajwa and several others also participated.

“The party held a threadbare discussion about the current political situation within the state of Jammu and Kashmir besides the measures to be taken to strengthen the party at the gross root level,” PDP’s Chief Spokesman Rafi Ahmad Mir said after the meet.

The participants observed that the onslaught on the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was multi-dimensional and every attempt was being made to politically disempower the citizens of the state. “It was also felt that while in some parts of the state the voters are being unified for the common cause there were parallel efforts being made in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir to create a vertical political split in order to chock and curb regional aspirations,” the spokesman said.

He said that it was decided that a wider consensus needs to be built to defeat the nefarious designs aimed at dividing the state into fragments and disempowering people all across.

“It was further observed that a coordinated political initiative was needed to restore the political authority of people of the state and protect the core interests of Jammu and Kashmir.  The party declared that it is open to coordination and reach out to safeguard Jammu and Kashmir’s core interests and special position,” he said.

“The meeting also held a threadbare discussion on the ways and means to strengthen the party across the state. It was decided that PDP will launch statewide programmes to reach out to the workers besides reorganization of important wings of the organization,” he added.

“There was a view among the members that several party leaders who are not now part of the organization have contributed for the growth of party and efforts could be made to reach out to them for the larger interests of the state,” said the spokesman.

Rampant arrests exacerbates anger, gives rise to further uncertainty: Tarigami

0

Srinagar, May 28 : CPI (M) leader M Y Tarigami Tuesday said the rampant arrest of people, especially youth, in recent times in south Kashmir and other parts of the valley are atrocious and undemocratic and such suppressive measures to contain dissent add to the already existing levels of alienation among the people.

In a statement issued, Tarigami said, “Arrests without any solid legal grounds do not augur well for the state. It has been done before as well in the state, but it has never yielded anything. On the other hand, it just exacerbates the anger and gives rise to further uncertainty.”

“We have always maintained that dissent should always have a place in a democratic society. Curbing the dissent and those holding a contradictory viewpoint is not democratic at all. On the other hand, such sections should be engaged,” Tarigami said.

He said arrest spree under the garb of law and order must stop and instead the youth be appealed to follow peaceful means to express their concern for justice and democratic rights. Using force and arrest as tool to silence the dissent will not only damage and destroy careers of our youth but it will surely prove detrimental results in future, he added.

Hundreds of people, especially youth, are languishing in jails and have been detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). In some cases, even after courts quashed the PSA, detained remain in prison as the police book them under the UAPA, he said, adding that this UAPA is being highly misused and it needs immediate review. The cases of those who have been detained under the PSA and UAPA need to be examined ahead of the Eid.

“We reject the repression and want peace to prevail in valley and not the silence of graveyard. Political leadership needs to have a political approach to solve the long pending political problem of the state. Security-oriented approach overtaking the political outreach, will end up being a loss for the people of Kashmir,” he added.

Islamabad: The Imran Khan government has filed a complaint of misconduct against some Supreme Court and High Court judges for hiding their foreign properties in countries like Spain and the UK, according to a media report on Tuesday.

President Arif Alvi has sent a reference of misconduct against three apex court judges who, allegedly, did not declare their foreign properties in their wealth statements, The Express Tribune reported.
However, there is no official confirmation whether the Supreme Judicial Council has received the reference against the judges.

The references, prepared by the law ministry, were filed with the help of a former Supreme Court judge, the report said said.

The wife of one of the judges purchased some property in Spain which was not disclosed in his wealth statement, the report said.

Legal experts said they would see whether the spouse is listed as a dependent in the tax records of the judge.

A complaint has also been lodged against a few high courts judges, one of whom allegedly owns inherent property in the UK.

The cash-strapped Imran Khan government has vowed to bring back all ill-gotten wealth of people who have stashed them abroad.

Pak’s nukes make its defence ‘invincible’, says Sharif from jail

0

Lahore: As Pakistan Tuesday marked the 21st anniversary of its atomic tests, jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that his decision to make the country a nuclear power has made its defence “invincible.”

On May 28, 1998 Pakistan carried out five nuclear tests at Chaghi in Balochistan province during Sharif’s tenure as prime minister. The day is since observed as Youm-e-Takbeer in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s nuclear tests came days after India successfully carried out the atomic tests in Pokhran on May 11.
“May 28 is an unforgettable day in the history of Pakistan. On this day, the defence of the country was made invincible when Pakistan emerged on the world map as a nuclear power,” 69-year-old Sharif, supremo of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said in a message which was shared on his party’s Twitter handle.

“Youm-e-Takbeer is a day of nation’s honour. A sign of nation’s unprecedented bravery, it also gives a message to the country’s enemies that there would be dire consequences in case of any misadventure against Pakistan,” he said in the message from the Kot Lakhpat jail where he is currently undergoing a seven-year-sentence in a corruption case.

Sharif said his government was threatened with economic sanctions in case of the atomic tests. He also said that Pakistan was offered billions of dollars for not conducting the tests. “But I accepted all the challenges and went ahead with the tests,” he said.

The PML-N chief claimed that external forces hatched conspiracies against him for making the country an economic power for his approval of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor due to which he was being punished – first forced to go on exile and later sentenced to jail.

“In the solitary confinement, I assure the nation that I will never compromise on the constitutional rights of the people, people’s right to vote and country’s security and sovereignty,” he said.

Sharif has been serving a seven-year prison term at the jail since December 24, 2018 when an accountability court convicted him in one of the three corruption cases filed in the wake of the apex court’s July 28, 2017 order in Panama Papers case.

Sharif and his family have denied any wrongdoing and allege that the corruption cases against them were politically motivated.
