All weather connectivity still a distant dream for Kashmir

Srinagar, May 11 : As Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for three days, the Kashmir would not have suffered heavy losses had the government made it all weather road.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the world remained closed since Wednesday. However, the traffic was partially restored on Saturday. But during last three days, the Kashmir suffered heavy losses as there were hundreds of trucks laden with live stock and fruits.

“A lot of live stock died for last few days and fruits perished. Now the traffic has been restored after cleared the road from landslides,” a traffic official told.

He said around 2000 vehicles including trucks laden with live stock other necessities were stranded. “The stranded vehicles are allowed to ply on the highway,” the official added.

The Valley is incurring heavy losses due to closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the only road connecting region with rest of the world.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road link to outside world, gets often closed. To upgrade Jammu-Srinagar road into four lanes for all weather route, the authorities started a project several years ago and the project was to be completed in 2013 and later its deadline was extended to December 2014.

However, the project has missed several deadlines due to “lackadaisical” approach of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

Official sources said the project was divided into six sub-projects, widening of Srinagar-Qazigund road (68-Kms), Qazigund-Banihal (16-Kms), Banihal-Ramban (36-Kms), Ramban-Udhampur (43-Kms), Chenani –Nashri (12-Kms), Jammu-Udhampur (65-Kms).

Sources said that the failure in completion of land acquisition process was the main reason behind the delay in the completion of the project.“There were various reasons behind the delay in the completion of the project. Primarily the state government was sluggish in completing the land acquisition process. Further there were certain issues at the administrative level as well,” they said. (KNS)

I belong to caste of the poor” Modii

0

Sonebhadra (UP), May 11 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday came down heavily on the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh for raising questions on his caste, asserting that he belongs to the caste of all poor countrymen.

Addressing an election rally here, Modi continued to attack the Congress over its leader Sam Pitroda’s hua to hua (It happened, so what?) remark on the anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

National security also figured prominently. Modi accused a previous coalition government of weakening the intelligence agencies and recalled that the Pokhran nuclear tests took place on this day 21 years back.

“They have destroyed Uttar Pradesh and now the SP and the BJP have come together to save themselves from destruction, he said, calling their alliance mahamilawati or adulterated.

They have started a new thing about my caste, he said, in an apparent reference to Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati’s jibe that he is a farzi backward — a fake OBC leader.

I want to tell them that Modi belongs to just one caste – whatever caste the poor belong to, I belong to that caste,” he said, listing the schemes that his government has launched for them.

He claimed that the country’s intelligence agencies suffered when a third front government, which included the Samajwadi Party, was in power at the Centre.

“Our intelligence agencies were weakened by an earlier ‘mahamilawati’ government, but the (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee government set that right,” he said.

“Many people connected with our security and intelligence agencies have written a lot about this. They have written how they had made the intelligence network hollow and the country had to bear its consequences for long, he said.

What the third front government did is in no way less than a crime,” he said.

“Whenever there is a ‘mahamilawati’ government in the country, it has threatened national security, he said.

The prime minister hailed scientists for the successful Pokhran nuclear tests this day in 1998.

“Twenty-one years back this day, India successfully carried out nuclear tests, Operation Shakti. I salute the scientists who brought laurels to the country with their hard work. This historic event in 1998 proves what strong political will can do for national security,” he said.

Referring to the Manmohan Singh term, he claimed the country got a weak government run by remote control after the one headed by Vajpayee.

He said that government brought a bad name to the country.

“So many scams took place but the Congress and its people had no remorse as their way of thinking is ‘hua to hua’,” he said making a fresh attack on the Congress for its leader Sam Pitroda’s remarks.

“It shows the character and mentality of the party, he said.

The hua to hua’ remark reflects the arrogance of the Congress,” he said.

Modi cited the Balakot air strikes against Pakistan as an example of what a bold government can accomplish.

“This is the new India. Now India barges into the hideouts of terrorists and kills them,” he added.

India Denies Human Rights To Kashmiri Political Prisoners: Geelani

Expressing his grave concern over the plight of political prisoners at the hands of fascist rulers of India and jail administration in and outside Jammu and Kashmir, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani said that while the universal declaration of human rights provides a clear guideline for the erstwhile governments of its state members, India brazenly deny the same rights to the political prisoners of Kashmir.

Terming the Indian attitude as a mere political vendetta, Hurriyat (G) chairman said that Kashmir is a pure political issue which can be settled according to the aspirations of the people by allowing right to self-determination. Military solutions never last long and in presence of a million occupation forces, Kashmir has been turned in a hell like jail where people suffer and live in a suffocated environment, he asserted.

Condemning the use of brute force against the people, especially the youth at Jamia Masjid Srinagar on the eve of first Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramdan, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman warned that by pushing the youth to the wall shall have grave consequences for which state administration would be responsible.

Expressing his solidarity with all the pro-freedom detenues languishing in jails in and outside Kashmir, Geelani condemned the ruthless and inhuman behaviour of the jail authorities.

Giving details of the prisoner’s plight Hurriyat (G) chairman said that even during the holy month of Ramdan, the detenues are kept in solitary confinement in small cells without basic amenities, unhygienic food and insufficient medical facilities have rendered the detenues to suffer miserably.

Hailing the strong commitment and steadfastness of all these prisoners including Mohammad Yaseen Malik, Masarat Aalam Bhat, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Dr. Hamid Fayaz, Dr. Shafi Sharyati, Dr. Mohammad Qasim Faktoo, Asiya Anrabi, Dr. G. M. Bhat, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Peer Saifullah, Raja Mehraj-ud-din Kalwal, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Farooq Ahmad Dar, Fehmeeda Sofi, Nahida Nasreen, Mohammad Yousuf Mir, Mohammad Yousuf Falahi, Abdul Gani Bhat, Sheikh Mohammad Ramzan, Shakeel Ahmad Yatoo, Abdul Ahad Para, Mushtaq aAhmad Veeri, Abdullah Nasir, Gh. Qadir Bhat, Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, Mohammad Ayoub Dar, Tariq Ahmad, Muzfar Ahmad Dar, Mohammad Hussain, Pir Mohammad Ashraf, Mushtaq Ahmad Hura, Yasin Ahmad Hura, Samiullah, Asadullah Parray, Hakeem Showkat, Mehraj-ud-Nanda, Basharat Bazaz, Tariq Ahmad Pandith, Mohammad Hussain, Hilal Ahmad Beigh, Noor Mohammad Kalwal, Advocate Zahid Ali, Istiyaq Ahmad Wani, Dr. Mohammad Saleem, Moulana Sarjan Barkati, Abdul Hai, Zahoor Ahmad Watali, Syed Shahid Yousuf, Syed Shakeel Ahmad, Asif Sultan and Abdul Rashid Shigan, he said that the precious sacrifices given by these detenues provides a base stone for our freedom movement who are languished in jails like Tihar, Jodhpur, Jajar, Haryana, Kuthwa, Kotbalwal, Riyasi, Udhampur, Amphala, Srinagar Central Jail, Baramulla, Mattan and Kupwara.

Hurriyat (G) chairman appealed the United Nations Human Rights Commission, International Red Cross, Amnesty International to visit the Indian jails and have on spot observations of the ill treatment and heinous violations of prisoner’s rights.

SRINAGAR, MAY 11: Advisor to the Governor, Mr. Khurshid Ahmed Ganai, has issued a fervent appeal to both wholeseller and retailer associations to advise their members to observe self-restraint and collectively decide not to charge more than the prices fixed by the Government.

He said the Government would take all proactive steps to ensure that people do not face any hardships in the availability of essential commodities during Ramadhan.

The Advisor further stated that the prices have been fixed after taking into consideration all market forces which leaves no room for an undue spike in the prices of essential commodities. He warned that strict action will be taken against those wholesellers and retailers who shoot up prices abnormally and violate the rates fixed by the Government.

Anjuman-e-Auqaf asks admin to not deploy forces around Jamia Masjid on Fridays

0

Srinagar: Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar on Saturday has asked the administration to not deploy government forces outside the historic mosque on Fridays.

A spokesman of the Auqaf in a communique  said the presence of forces in large numbers around the Mosque creates an atmosphere of fear among the worshipers.

Adding that the presence of forces in large numbers around the masjid, damages the centrality and sanctity of the masjid.

“The deployment of government forces in huge numbers before the prayers also gives ample opportunity to certain vested interests to foment trouble around the mosque and to damage the sanctity and sacredness of the grand masjid,” said the spokesman.

He said that the Anjuman has time and again called on the administration to ensure no deployment of forces around Jamia Masjid on Fridays but the frequent pleas seems to be falling on the deaf ears.
