Prominent cleric arrested in Pulwama

Pulwama, March 19 : A prominent religous cleric has been arrested by government forces in southern Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Sources told that Moulana Muhammad Amin, Pulwama’s Prominent Cleric and Khateeb Khankah-e-Mir Sahab (Alaihi Rahma) Washbugh Pulwama has been arrested last night from his residence on circular road in Dangarpora area of Pulwama town.

The residents have condemned the act and have demanded his immediate release.(KNO)

IUST postpones exams scheduled today

Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora has postponed the semester examinations scheduled for Tuesday, an official said.

Srinagar, March 19 : The Kashmir meteorological department on Tuesday predicted light rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.


“There are likely chances of light rain/snow at isolated places over the state during next 24 hours,” the official said.

Woman jumps into Jehlum in Kashmir’s Capital

Srinagar, March 19 : A woman on Tuesday morning attempted suicide by jumping into river Jhe­lum in summer capital.


Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said that a lady (name with­held) jumped into Jhelum this morning at Safakadal area in Kashmir’s capital.


However nearby people when saw jumped into the river and rescued the woman reports added.


Meanwhile a police official also confirmed the incident to Kashmir Despatch and said that a team reached the spot and taken the woman to Hos­pital. Officer said that further investigation in this regard has been initiated.

Forces lay seige to Hajjin village

Hajjin, March 19 : Forces on early Tuesday sealed north Kashmir’s Hajjin village in Bandipora district.

Reports said forces conducted house to house search operation in Chandergeera village of Hajjin Bandipora.

Local reports said public and transport movement affected in the area as all entry and exit points are sealed by heavy forces of Army, Police and CRPF.

Official sources said following inputs about presence of some suspicious movement searches were launched.

Searches in the area was on when last reports came in.

No list of candidates announced yet, may do so by Tuesday: BJP

SRINAGAR, Mar 18:  Clarifying that no list of candidates for Parliament polls in J&K was made public as of now, BJP Monday Termed the list of candidates doing rounds on the social media as “fake” and imagination. The party said that no such list has been released from anywhere in the BJP as yet and asked people not to believe it.

The National Party but added that the list could be out by Tuesday.

Speaking to RNA, a local news gathering agency, party’s National General Secretary and Incharge J&K affairs Avinash Rai Khana said that the list of candidates was still to be announced. He however, added that the list may be finalised by late evening today or at the most on Tuesday.

“No, we have not issued any list of candidates as yet. But we may do so late this evening or tomorrow.” Kahana told RNA.

Earlier a list of BJP probables for J&K parliament elections was doing rounds on various social media platforms throughout the day prompting the ruling party to issue a denial.

 Meanwhile Mr. Khana   paid tributes to departed Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parriker and said the nation had lost a veteran leader. 

Forces launch nocturnal CASO in South Kashmir’s Tral

Pulwama, March 18 : Government forces on Monday late evening launched a cordon-and-search operation in South Kashmir’s Tral village.


Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said that a joint team of army’s 42 RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege at Pinglish area of Tral late today evening.


A police officer also confirmed the incident and said that the cordon was launched following inputs about the movement of some suspected militants.


Pertainally, suspected militants on Monday evening shot dead a 25-year-old labourer Mohsin Ahmad Wani (25) son of Ghulam Ahmad Wani outside his home at Reshipora area of Tral.

‘Balance For Better’, KU Celebrates International Women’s Day-2019

Srinagar, Mar 18: One day seminar ‘Balance For Better’, celebrating International Women’s Day 2019 was held here at Gandhi Bhawan University of Kashmir on Monday.

The event was organized by Centre For Women’s Studies and Research University of Kashmir.

Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Professor Talat Ahmad while presiding over the seminar appreciated the working of Women’s Studies and Research Centre KU.

 He said that having courses related to women is very important for any educational institute as benefitting women in any way would ultimately benefit the society.

Praising the role of the University in empowering women Prof Talat said that the varsity has created many opportunities for women. “We have out-reach programs for women who are not able to reach to university.”

Prof Talat assured that he would facilitate all the recommendations given by the centre to make better the working of the Women’s Studies and Research Centre.

Ex -State Vigilance Commissioner and Retired Principal District Session Judge Gous-ul-Nissa Jeelani who was the guest of honour, in her key note address said that women everywhere face many challenges and that gender discrimination is ingrained into the sub-consciousness of our society.

“There is a conventional mindset operating in the society working on the pattern of men being earners and women being care-takers, while the most important empowering tool for women is financial independence, so there is a lot that needs to be done to modify the mindset of our society,” she said.

Jeelani also added that there are meaningful differences that exist between men and women, they however should not amount to inequality.

“Gender equity is the key concept in addressing the issues relating to inequalities instead of gender equality.”

Dean College Development Council KU Prof Neelofar Khan who was the special guest on the occasion said that ever since the inception of Women Studies Centre at the University there has been immense support from the Vice Chancellor.

She said that the department has been working with a lot of zest to uplift women. “Advocacy and capacity building are among other the mandate of the centre,” Prof Khan added.

Co-ordinator Centre for Women’s Studies and Research DrTabasum Firdous welcomed all the dignitaries, scholars and students on the occasion and thanked the Vice Chancellor for facilitating all the academic pursuits of the centre.  She further highlighted the role of the department as a catalyst in the sensitization of gender issues. KU dedicates women`s special bus

Meanwhile a women’s special bus was flagged -off by Prof Talat Ahmad which has been dedicated by Department of Students Welfare KU and shall ply from Nowgam Railway Station to University main campus Hazratbal. 

Dean Students Welfare Prof Raies Qadri said that the bus service shall be exclusively for the female students of the University.

J&K Bank Chairman visits family of deceased employee
