Reopen Kargil-Skardu Road

0

A day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, hundreds of people participated in a march in Kargil district of Ladakh to demand the opening of Kargil-Skardu route.

It is reported that around 12,000 to 15,000 families remained divided due to the closure of the route connecting Kargil with Skardu. These families got divided due to the formation of the ceasefire line in 1948 which later became the Line of Control (LoC).

He appealed to the government of India to open both Kargil-Skardu and Turtuk-Khapualo roads on humanitarian grounds. He referred to the Parliament resolution of 1994 which said the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, including Gilgit-Baltistan, was an integral part of India.

The people in Ladakah say that these families were divided in a night in 1947 and again in 1971, more villages like Hundermo, Budgam, Tyakshi and Cholunkha came under Indian control and more families got divided.

Need of the hour is that Government of India must take up the issue with Pakistan so as to address this humanitarian issue. Reopening the old traditional routes shall not only facilitate meeting of the divided families but will also create a conducive atmosphere strengthening the people to people contact across the LoC.

Srinagar 02 February: Condemning house arrested and ill treatment given to Er. Rasheed by the police, AIP Spokesman Sheeban Ashie has said that by such cheap measures New Delhi cannot hide its failures and mislead the world community over its atrocities on people of Jammu & Kashmir. In a statement issued today spokesman said that this morning a police party led by SDPO Saddar raided Er. Rasheed’s residence and forced him to accompany police station Rajbagh but after Er. Rasheed’s denial and heated arguments, police party left his residence and placed him under house detention. Spokesman added that AIP is committed to fight for the rights of people of Jammu & Kashmir and by disallowing peaceful protest on eve of Prime Minister’s visit against looting resources of J&K, Governor Administration has yet again proved that fundamental rights of people of J&K have been snatched and suspended. Mr. Ashie added “New Delhi has chocked space for all those voices who dare to speak for the people of J&K and talk about human rights atrocities and right to self-determination. It is obvious that New Delhi just wants violence as it has nothing to defend except its brutalities and history of broken promises. There is nothing in the hands of civil administration and state is virtually under direct command and control of army, police and other security agencies. While much hype is being given to Prime Minister’s visit but the fact is that entire Kashmir is looking like a battle field and life of jail return militants, pro-resistance leaders and common men is being made a hell. Even the bikes are being seized at various check posts without a reason and the ugly face of state is visible everywhere”.

J-K: After 30 years, wedding bells ring in Gulmarg’s oldest church

0

An Australian couple in Indian wedding attire; dozens of foreign skiers wearing Kashmiri Pherans as guests, local priests and snow all around. And when the ceremony ended, Kashmiri music and food followed in the evening.

This was the wedding of Australians Tim Robertson and Kate Hamilton Thursday at St Mary’s church in Gulmarg. It was the first in over three decades at Kashmir’s oldest Protestant Church.

Engaged for a year and fond of snowboarding, it took the couple six months to plan the wedding in Gulmarg. “That day (last year), we were snowboarding back home and we decided to get married. But then Kate wanted a white wedding and in the mountains,” said Tim. A friend of Kate’s who organises skiing trips to Kashmir was roped in and a year later, their wish was fulfilled.

But until Thursday afternoon, minutes before the ceremony the couple walked to the church as heavy snow swirled all around. “Until the last moment, we were not sure that things will happen smoothly. We were surprised to see the skiers at our wedding. I don’t think we could have done this ceremony the way it happened here at any other place. I am speechless,” said Kate.

The couple also had a backup plan if the local priests did not turn up – exchange rings with each other. Despite the heavy snowfall in the Valley, however, two priests from Srinagar travelled to Gulmarg to perform the wedding.

Rev. Vinu Kaul (Associated Priest), one of the priests told The Indian Express that it was an “emotional” ceremony for him. “This church is like 100 years old and our sentiments are associated with this church. So when I came to know that a marriage is going to be held in Gulmarg, I was very happy,” he said. “It was the first such ceremony since 1990.”

“I was also unwell. But, despite all that, I decided to go to Gulmarg. Because it was for the first time in my life, that a marriage was held at Gulmarg, I didn’t want it to miss at any cost,” he said.

At the church, were mostly fellow skiers and for many at the ski resort, it was a different event to attend. “Everyone was so excited. When I found out that a wedding is happening here, we started preparations immediately. By afternoon, the couple came and the ceremony was held,” says Mohammed Yousuf, caretaker of the Church. “It was a new thing for me. In my 15 years here, I only witness people visiting the church during Christmas.”
