Srinagar, Dec 21 : As subzero temperatures grip Kashmir, the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir has issued a crucial traffic advisory for the safety of motorists and bikers navigating icy and fog-covered roads.
In an advisory a copy of which lies with Kashmir Despatch, the RTO has urged the public to follow essential guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure safe travel during the extreme cold.
The advisory advises residents to minimize unnecessary travel, particularly in the early mornings and late evenings when temperatures are at their lowest. Travelers are also urged to check weather forecasts and traffic updates before heading out, allowing extra time for their journeys to navigate slippery roads carefully.
For those driving, the advisory emphasizes a few key precautions: ensure vehicles are equipped with winter or all-season tires for better road grip, maintain proper anti-freeze levels in the coolant system, and verify the condition of the battery as cold weather can reduce its efficiency.
Additionally, keeping headlights and wipers in working condition, along with ensuring the fuel tank is half full to avoid freezing, are also highlighted.
Motorists are further urged to adopt safe driving practices, such as reducing speed and maintaining adequate distance from other vehicles to avoid skidding. They should accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly to retain control of the vehicle. The use of low-beam headlights is advised in foggy conditions, and overtaking should be avoided in icy or low-visibility areas. Bikers should wear thermal gear and helmets with anti-fog visors.
In case of skidding, drivers should steer gently in the direction of the skid and refrain from slamming the brakes. The advisory also stresses the importance of carrying an emergency kit, which should include: First-aid supplies. Flashlight with extra batteries. Thermal blanket or wrap. Non-perishable food and water. Ice scraper and de-icing spray.
For any emergencies, motorists can contact the following helplines: 7780917148, 9765079102, or the traffic department at 103. The RTO also reminded the public to stay focused and avoid using mobile phones while driving.
“Safety comes first – stay alert and prepared during these challenging weather conditions,” the RTO advised.
