SOPORE, July 10: In a remarkable turn of events, the youth of Sopore in Kashmir are shifting their focus from stone-throwing to a more constructive pursuit – cricket. This captivating transformation is inspiring the local youth and fostering newfound hope and unity among the young individuals in the area.

Snober Samander, Sopore’s first female cricketer, has emerged as a symbol of this transformative movement. With a burning passion for the game since childhood, Snober has been associated with the Saat academy for the past two years, honing her skills and participating in various cricket tournaments across the Kashmir valley.

In an exclusive interview with Kashmir Despatch, Snober expressed her unwavering determination to represent the Indian national women’s cricket team.

She credited her family’s unwavering support for fueling her dreams and acknowledged the challenges she faces as a female cricketer in her town.

Despite the difficulties and criticism she encounters, Snober remains resolute and committed to her passion for cricket.

Her exceptional batting talent has already garnered attention, making her a rising star in different cricket formats across the Kashmir valley.

Snober has also taken it upon herself to advocate for the establishment of a cricket academy for women in Baramulla, North Kashmir.

She believes that such an academy would encourage other females to not only play the sport but also represent Kashmir positively at national and international levels.

The support from the local community has been mixed, with Snober facing obstacles due to the lack of infrastructure and coaches. However, she remains undeterred, determined to follow her passion and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Sports enthusiasts claim that this shift from stone throwing to cricket represents more than just a change in physical activities.

“It signifies a transformation in mindset, where the youth of Kashmir are embracing teamwork, discipline, and fair play as catalysts for personal growth, empowerment, and a brighter future,” a young athlete said.
