Kashmir division is always portrayed as a region that is chiefly dependent on Tourism because of its spectacular landscapes and hospitable inhabitants. But in reality, the revenue generated through the tourism industry does not exceed more than 10% of its total economy.
The actual backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy and prosperity lies in the horticulture sector which not only provides for the orchardists but for numerous individuals who are either directly or indirectly related to this sector.
The apple selling and exporting of famous Kashmiri cash crops to outside states and even abroad has opened the doors of wonderful opportunities to the orchardist and farmers alike which is supplemented with appropriate government schemes meant for the welfare of the growers.
While much has been achieved in the sector until now, it still requires persistent efforts to remain abreast with the market demands. The maintenance of quality product and unhindered supply is imperative for the holistic and perpetual growth of this trade.
At home new technologies with regards to carriage and storing of the fruits for longer intervals of time is requisite in order to maintain a command over the market and get back appropriate prices for the produce. Currently there exists a dire need for setting up of new Controlled Atmosphere Stores which according to some reports may even exceed 8 lac metric tonnes across Kashmir division.
Furthermore, the introduction of new organic and high yielding breeds would diversify the produce in high density farms for which government subsidies and schemes must also be augmented. Kashmir has enough potential to become a horticultural hub in the country, provided a well-thought & systematic approach is adopted.
