The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Wednesday said that it will start a comprehensive awareness campaign about implementation of Swach Bharat Mission. “Though we have conducted sanitation drives at hospitals, schools and shrines, a lot more still needs to be done for effective implementation of the Swach Bharat campaign. We will be starting a comprehensive awareness campaign now and we will also involve religious heads so that the campaign is fully implemented. We have conducted sanitation drives at hospitals, schools and shrines, but we feel lot more still needs to be done for effective implementation of the cleanliness mission,” SMC commissioner Showkat Zargar told reporters here. Zargar said a sanitation campaign in Bangladesh had become very successful after the government there involved religious heads like imams to achieve hygiene. “We will also involve religious heads here for successful impact of the Swach Bharat campaign,” he said. Under the mission, the SMC will focus on setting up toilets at households which are without such facilities while community toilets will also be constructed at congested parts of the city, mainly in downtown. “For construction of the toilets under the scheme, Rs. 12,500 will be provided and those households and localities having toilets in unsanitary conditions will be provided an aid of Rs. 5,333. So far, SMC has received 847 applications from people,” he said. Zargar said the corporation will conduct an inspection before releasing the aid for construction of toilets. He said the SMC would also set up community toilets and construct common soakage at congested old city areas.
