COVID-19 outbreak: GMC Baramulla flouts guidelines of social distancing

Date:

MASRAT NABI

BARAMULLA, April 8: At a time when the people across the globe are expected to follow the health advisories to stem the spread of Coronavirus, a case has come to the fore wherein social distancing norms were not cared for by none other than a government medical college in Kashmir.

The Government Medical College Baramulla had started walk-in- recruitment against para-medical posts but without bothering for the requisite arrangements necessitated in view of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Since the joblessness in Kashmir is so high that the youth are ready to take any cudgels not to miss any opportunity for getting a job that too when it comes to the government sector.

“The scheduled interview for para medical posts advertized by the GMC Baramulla was attended by hundreds of youth in the GMC premises and it was very difficult to maintain the social distancing in such a situation,” officials associated with the recruitment process told Kashmir Despatch.

All over the world, where people are being quarantined and are being compelled to practice social distancing, the GMC Baramulla missed the bus. “At a time when the whole of Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under a fear of the deadly disease, the GMC Baramulla authorities should have well planned the interview. There is no problem in recruitment process per se but the same should have been arranged keeping the advisories into consideration,” a parent of an aspirant for these posts told Kashmir Despatch.

The interview scheduled to be held in the GMC Baramulla was arranged in such a manner that hundreds of youth were seen huddled providing enough of chances for contamination of the deadly disease.

“The authorities behaved irresponsibly and had risked lives of hundreds of people especially the youth who were called for the interview,” another aspirant told Kashmir Despatch.

When contacted, Dr Abdul Hamid, Principal GMC Baramulla told Kashmir Despatch, “We did not expect such a huge rush for interview. We took an immediate action after receiving this much of response. And now we have decided to conduct the interview after lockdown.”
